Frozen and Independent Fairy Tale Women

I came across this on Facebook the other day:

While it's definitely true about the movie, it's wrong about Frozen being the first.

Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty (spoilers)

I just saw Maleficent, and I loved it. Granted, I expected to like it visually, but thought I'd be appalled with the story line. After all, it's based on Disney's Sleeping Beauty. While that movie is also a visual treat, it's the worst retelling of the story - judging by the sun, Aurora is asleep for a total of about 24 hours. The whole point of the story is that she's asleep for one hundred years!

Ricky of the Tuft - a Tale Told Two Ways

While I'm talking about Zipes' Beauty and the Beast, I also want to mention the stories of Riquet with the Tuft (or, more commonly in English, Ricky of the Tuft) that are in his book. This is the opposite case of the typical folklore type scenario - instead of one story told through two different cultures, it is one culture's story told by two different authors.

A great book for early fairy tale tellings is Jack Zipes' Beauty and the Beast. One of my favorite stories - as well as most inspirational, in the sense of writing my book - is Finette Cendron by Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy.

The Silver Rings - a Tale of Tales

My wife and I were on a road trip one time, and I started talking about ATU folktale types (What? This doesn't usually come up in conversation?) That's the Aarne-Thompson-Uther folktale index, which lists stories by their types. So there's not an original Cinderella story, for example, there are types of Cinderella stories, that exist in different cultures. The details may be different, even radically so, but the general outline is the same.
